Refillable tanks for four colors: Canon PIXMA G4500 in response to Epson Ecotank series
Canon uses the Pixma-G series on inkjet printers with refillable tanks instead of cartridges. Epson has already done this with the Ecotank series-read the test of the Epson Ecotank et-2550. The test introduces the model Canon PIXMA G4500, which prints, scans, copies and faxes. The multifunction sees canon in use in small offices. The test therefore examines how it beats in the working environment.

If we focus on the page prices, Canon has succeeded with the Pixma G4500 thanks to the tank system a super cheap working multifunction. It is quite true that such a device would be ideally lifted in the small office. However, the pace of work is slow. In addition, important features such as a duplex unit are missing-at least for printing, and better for scanning. Canon is certainly not convinced of the refillable systems at the moment, because otherwise the company would not focus exclusively on its own online shop. The requested price of 329 euro is juicy, but the two-year guarantee is commendable.

Unlike the Epson Ecotank models, the ink tanks of the Canon PIXMA G4500 are not attached to the housing but are integrated in it. The black tank is on the one hand, the three tanks for blue, red, yellow on the other side of the case. The ink flows through a line system to the print heads, which must be used once during the first installation. They look like the canon cartridges with an integrated printhead, where the cartridge change not only new inks, but also new nozzles come into the printer-for example, the model Canon PIXMA MG3650, which was already in the PC World test.

When the print heads are installed, the ink is filled. The delivery includes vials with 325 milliliters of black ink and three times 70 millilitres of Ink. For the filling of the pipes is estimated a little less than a quarter of the ink on it. The tanks themselves can be reached by folding the housing below the scanning unit. The tanks are covered but not lockable. Unauthorized persons can thus fill other liquids without problems-a disadvantage.

For this purpose, the ink vials are well welded and provided with a drip stop. So if you turn one upside down to fill the contents, you don't have to fear an immediate spill of the liquid. Nevertheless, we advise you to place kitchen crepe under the multifunction and to put on disposable gloves when you first use ink bottles. The tanks themselves are sealed with rubber stoppers and made of transparent plastic. So you can see from the front how much ink you are still able to fill. Even later you have a good look at the ink level.

Canon gives the black ink a range of 6000 pages. It is a manufacturer's own specification, but it should be based on the official ISO standard pages. This will result in a page price of 0.23 cents-a tad lower than the tested Ecotank et-2550 from Epson and absolutely unbeatable. For the page, the indication is 7000 pages and results in a price of 0.43 cents-equally unattainable for multifunction with conventional cartridges. Currently, the refill vials of the GI-590 9.99 Euro per color and 13.99 euro for the black ink.

The multifunction Canon PIXMA G4500 has a fax function on board and therefore also an automatic template feeder for a maximum of 20 sheets. To do this, it connects either via USB locally or via WLAN over the network to the computer. He also manages the mobile printing standards Mopria, Apple Airprint, Google Cloud Print and the manufacturer's own Canon Cloud link. Via Wi-Fi Direct, the wireless connection works without a router, using the font display to operate directly on the device.
Unlike the Epson Ecotank models, the Canon PIXMA G4500 can print borderless. It pulls the paper from the rear feeder, into which a maximum of 100 sheets of paper fit-somewhat little for a professionally used device. There is no other paper cassette. And another shortcoming is the Canon PIXMA G4500: It lacks a duplex unit for the automatic printing of front and back of a sheet. This is especially unfortunate for an output device that is intended for trouble-free printing and is therefore considered by a lot of users.

In the speed tests, the Canon PIXMA G4500 delivers a mixed performance. On the one hand, the multifunction printer prints a page Grauert letter in 17 seconds and thus achieves a decent value. On the other hand, we are waiting for ten text pages from Word 1:09 minutes and 5:35 minutes on Ten color pages from Acrobat, and thus in both cases a comparatively long time. The pressure unit also slows down the copying process, where the black-and-white copy is still afloat with 12 seconds, but the color copy is slowly completed with 41 seconds. Only during scanning are the 7-second times for the preview and 15 seconds for the scan.

Quality of printing, scans and copies
The
Canon PIXMA G4500 uses four colors-blue, red, yellow and black. The latter is made of pigmented ink, while canon is familiar with color-based variants. The letters are very filigree on the paper, are good to read, but would have more black cover. The G4500 produces homogeneous coloured surfaces. The colors themselves are slightly bright but harmonious. In photo printing, the shades of gray and natural colouring are pleasing. The printer masters even difficult tasks such as skin tones without unnatural overdrawing. Some observers may therefore perceive them as somewhat pale. In the scans the color evaluation detects a red, but in the Sichttest we perceive the colouring as quite round. There is criticism of the colour copy: Here Pastel shades come only as grey steps on the paper.
