As HP's flagship inkjet multifunction printer (MFP), the HP PageWide Enterprise Color Flow 586z combines the company's PageWide technology, which brings laser-class speeds to inkjets, and the solutions digital workflow solutions and productivity features of its Flow series. It's a terrific printer, worth considering by workgroups looking for a mid-volume color MFP, although in our tests the default speed and output quality weren't not quite what we expected.

The HP PageWide Enterprise Color Flow 586z is the most premium of the three models introduced by the company. The base model HP X585dn ($2,000) lacks fax capabilities, while it and the midrange HP X585f ($2,300) lack the slide-out keyboard, OCR capabilities, and detection the X585z's dual-feed ultrasonic, and their ADFs don't exceed 50 sheets and are inverted models, which flip each two-sided page to scan the second side rather than scanning both sides of the page at once, as the X585z.

The HP PageWide Enterprise Color Flow 586z can print, scan, copy, and fax; it can scan to email, network folder, USB drive or FTP server, and print from USB drive. It offers password-protected printing and a number of other security features, and has a built-in 320GB encrypted hard drive. You can initiate jobs from the screen with its pivoting eight-inch color touchscreen interface, which features image preview, simple menus, and more. You can enter data or text on a full-size retractable QWERTY keyboard.

The printer weighs 80 pounds and measures 22.6 x 21 x 21.5 inches (HWD), which is way too big to share a desk with. Its scanner, equipped with a 100-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), scans both sides of a document simultaneously. Scanning features include ultrasonic jam detection, auto orientation, auto page cropping, and other image correction features. It also has send to SharePoint and built-in OCR, which lets you read and save scanned files in multiple formats, including a searchable PDF. The tray fits documents up to legal size.

The MFP has a standard paper capacity of 550 sheets, split between a 500-sheet letter-size tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose feeder. You can also add an optional 500-sheet tray, for a maximum capacity of 1,050 sheets. An automatic duplexer allows you to print on both sides of a sheet of paper.

Output quality
Output quality from the X585z was mixed, with text quality slightly above average for an inkjet, average graphics quality, and subpar photo quality. Text quality was good enough for most business uses, with the exception of desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts.

Graphics quality was good enough for most internal use, as well as PowerPoint documents, although I might be hesitant to give them to a potential client I was looking to impress. Many backgrounds looked slightly faded and there was noticeable dithering (graininess) in many illustrations. It did well in printing thin colored lines and for the most part distinguishing between similar shades.

Photo quality was below average for an inkjet. A monochrome photo had a tint, as well as light banding (a regular pattern of streaks). A few other prints showed a slight tint. Several had some loss of detail in dark areas. Only a few of our test prints would pass for drugstore quality.

The X585z's running costs of 1.2 cents per monochrome page and 5.6 cents per color page, based on price and yield data for HP-supplied ink and other consumables, are a highlight ; the color figure is particularly impressive. The HP X576dw's running costs are slightly higher, 1.3 cents and 6.8 cents, respectively, while the Dell C3765dnf has monochrome and color costs of 1.5 and 10 cents, respectively. The running costs of the HP M575c are even higher, at 1.8 and 13 cents respectively.

With easy setup from your smartphone, tablet or PC, you can start printing and getting online right away. Connect your smartphone or tablet directly to the printer and easily print without accessing the network.
